SET-BC Annual General Meeting 2012On September 5th and 6th, SET-BC consultants from around the province met in Vancouver for their AGM. Each year at the beginning of September, our consultants gather to share information, discuss program direction and policies and connect with colleagues.

This year we welcomed two new consultants to SET-BC. Virginia MacKinnon joins the Provincial Resource Team as the Training Manager and Colin Cheng joins the Region 2 Lower Mainland team as a consultant for the Fraser Valley.

During the first day of the AGM, consultants discussed a number of issues including the new student allocation for districts and implications for our service delivery model, the role of the consultant in supporting teams implementing assistive technology, strategies for supporting district planning for assistive technology implementation, and possible development of student activity days. Consultants also heard about the various provincial projects and initiatives which can help their teams use technology more effectively. Consultants later met in smaller interest groups to make specific plans for this year’s projects and initiatives.

On the second day, Bill Standeven, Manager of Diversity and Equity from the Ministry of Education joined us and presented his thoughts on the future of Special Education in our province. He shared that the focus of his office is to continue to “help kids who need the help”. Bill described the exciting projects happening around the province in districts wanting to support the needs of their diverse learners. Bill believes that SET-BC consultants have an important role to play in supporting districts meet the diverse needs of students.

As with every AGM, there is always a great deal to share and discuss and most consultants would agree that two days is never enough. The AGM provides an opportunity for our consultants to meet all together and the meeting helps everyone get off to a successful start. If you are interested in knowing more about the issues and topics discussed at our AGM, contact your regional consultant – he or she will be glad to share!
