This project stream explores innovative and respectful strategies for including Aboriginal teachings and content into student learning. Technology in the stream encourages students’ artistic expression, original music composition and digital storytelling through apps such as Explain Everything, iMovie, Photoshop Mix and Sketchbook. Project teams regularly participate in a provincially-facilitated online community of practice to share their learning and grow together in their inquiry.

SD46 - Kinnikinnick Elementary

Hear Our Voices!
The goal of this project is to support students’ artistic expression and creativity through storytelling, music and digital art. There will be a focus on creativity as students explore the big ideas of the renewed language arts curriculum while delving into the Original Voice theme. Students will inquire into the world around them, particularly through oral traditions and share the stories within themselves and their families, using iPads to document their voice and learning.

Using apps such as the Camera, Book Creator, and Explain Everything, the team hopes to encourage all of our students, no matter of differing abilities to tell their stories. The school grounds and the surrounding forest habitats will be the project’s primary classroom. Students will develop authentic questions, conduct research and gather place-based evidence. They will then share their learning creations to their classroom and community. Topics will include the aboriginal concept of interconnectedness and the history of the town-site and First Peoples communities. There may also be a development of a passion project based on student interest and engagement incorporating story, music and art.

SD71 - Miracle Beach Elementary

Salmon in the Classroom: Life Science and First Nations’ Cultural Significance
In this project, 2 classes will work together to raise salmon in the classroom while learning about the salmon life cycle and the role salmon play in First Nations culture. The older students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills while they mentor the younger students in the use of technology to communicate their learning. All students will have the opportunity to learn new ways of using technology to communicate and share their learning, and all will have the opportunity to learn from First Nations elders and community resource people about the topic.

SD8 - Redfish Elementary

Stories From Here
In this project, students will learn about Aboriginal Storytelling in the context of the Redfish Elementary School 2018- 2019 school theme of “The Forest”. The team plans to invite storytellers from the four local nations in which Redfish Elementary school district resides (Kootenay Lake). As well, the team hopes to reach out to the Redfish school family to invite aboriginal parents/grandparents/family members to share stories from their cultures. This project will utilize technology to create a video presentation of the students re-telling stories they have learned from these elders and knowledge keepers, as well as to connect with other storytellers who are not able to come to the school (Skype, Google Talk, etc).

“The Forest” project is an extension of the 2017-18 JVH Aboriginal Storytelling Project. By repeating the project in a different school, the team hopes to share and further the resource guide developed from the 2017-18 project. As well, the team hopes this project will reflect the uniqueness of storytelling from the perspective of the four different nations who reside in the Kootenay region of School District No. 8.

SD22 - WL Seaton & Clarence Fulton

Aboriginal Academy: A Showcase of Indigenous Perspectives
Two different groups of secondary students will be enrolled in Aboriginal Education Academies at WL Seaton Secondary and Clarence Fulton Secondary in Vernon. One group of Gr. 10, 11, 12 students will participate in the Academy at WL Seaton from September to January, and the second group of Gr.9, 10, 11 students will participate in the same academy program at Clarence Fulton from February to June.

This is a blended learning environment meeting the learning outcomes for Social Studies and English First Peoples. This program provides an enhanced curriculum through specialized instruction and learning opportunities that increase student engagement and success. Aboriginal Academy students will explore the significance of placed based learning by visiting local sites of importance on the traditional territory of The Okanagan Indian Band. Students will learn from the land experientially, gaining cultural and historical perspectives from community members and elders through oral traditions and story. Students will recognize the role of indigenous knowledge and history through land and place. The canoe culture of the Sylix people and canoe/lake water certification are main goals of The Aboriginal Academy.

As part of the program, students take regular fieldtrips to local places, participate in cultural workships, and learn from various guest speakers, elders and knowledge keepers. Indigenous perspectives will be explored within historical and contemporary contexts. As well, the students meet with knowledgeable local Okanagan Indian Band memers to listen and learn their stories and share their culture.

During these learning activities, students will document their learning (with presenter permissions) by taking photos of the place and/or videos of the presenter, or videos of themselves at the place reciting what they have learned about the place.

Upon returning to the classroom, students will embed these digital artifacts within their digital maps, digital journals, video logs etc. within programs such as Explain Everything.
