SD8 Celebrates Speech and Hearing Month

In the Spring of 2017, The Kootenay Lake School District in Nelson, BC, took part in the Better Speech and Hearing Challenge, called #communicateawareness. With SET-BC’s support, district SLPs equipped various people from the local community (including Nelson’s mayor, a school district trustee) with devices with which they participated in a communication challenge – Order something at a local coffee shop without using your voice.

Reflecting on their experiences, participants gained a greater awareness of, and appreciation for, communicating in different ways, and in accommodations that can be made available throughout the community. While communities are often built with many considerations for those with various physical needs, greater work can be done to implement “communication ramps” to bring accessibility to the realm of communication.
