Shadow Support
Building capacity by providing support for District Specialists and Educators
Shadow Support is a consultation-based service offered by SET-BC to support school teams in exploring assistive technology (AT) strategies and inclusive practices. It is designed to build capacity through collaboration, idea sharing, strategic planning and seeking guidance on how to support students effectively. This service does not include direct training, equipment provision, or direct implementation support. The duration of Shadow Support will vary depending on location, student and team needs, and SET-BC team availability.
District Specialists (including Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments) can request Shadow Support for students who are not currently receiving SET-BC services. A SET-BC SLP/OT/TSVI of will collaborate with the district specialist of the same discipline to engage in initial problem-solving, share strategies and tools, and discuss possible next steps for AT trials. This support is ideal for teams seeking guidance prior to a formal SET-BC referral or service.
Classroom Teachers and Resource/Inclusion Teachers can request Shadow Support from a SET-BC Educator:
- For Students Who Previously Received SET-BC Full Service
Educators can request support to explore next steps in extending AT use across different learning contexts. A SET-BC Educator will collaborate to deepen curricular connections and identify opportunities to sustain and expand AT integration beyond the original service period. - For Students Who Have Not Received SET-BC Services
Educators may request support to learn more about inclusive AT tools and universal supports that promote access to curriculum. This includes sharing readily available apps, programs, and strategies that can be used to support diverse learners in the classroom.
