Presenting Kristian

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles which guides the inclusive classroom. It suggests that a one-size-fits-all approach to instruction and assessment is not effective to meet the needs of all learners. Classrooms around BC are partnering with SET-BC to dive deeper into UDL principles, and Alison Bos’s classroom in Williams Lake is an excellent example of what “Multiple Means of Engagement, Representation, and Action & Expression” look like in today’s inclusive classroom.

A key component of UDL is providing students with options for expression and communication. In the video below, we meet Kristian, who has been given options for how he might present information to his teacher and his whole class in such a way that he not only survives, but he thrives. As you will hear Mrs. Bos state, “It was such a shift in his personality, from being shy and not wanting to even look at kids in the class, to being at the front of the classroom, leading the entire class discussion… mind blowing!”
