Learning from Our Obstacles – Lessons from a Grade 5 Student
Russell, a grade 5 student in SD41, shares his excitement about using his SET-BC technology. Russell is a student who has low vision. He requires a number of adaptations in the classroom to participate fully. Over the year of SET-BC service, he learned to use his technology to complete daily assignments and activities.
This success is attributed to a team effort, and Russell’s enthusiasm. He was supported by a dedicated school team – Anna, the district TSVI, Esther, his Braille Educational Assistant, and Sarah, his classroom teacher.
Russell’s technology includes: an iPad Pro, which helps him to access and complete assignments; a MagniLink S video magnifier in conjunction with a laptop, which are used for room viewing and completing assignments; and a Focus 40 refreshable Braille display for reading and writing.
And the learning stretched beyond Russell. His classroom teacher realized that adaptations useful for Russell were useful for others in the classroom!
