Braille During the Secondary Years

Banner - Teaching Braille Students

Braille reading students in secondary school will already be able to read and write. It is important for teachers of braille reading students to continue to foster a braille rich environment so that students are encouraged to read and write in braille. Most braille-reading students at the secondary level will participate in academic activities on an equal level with their sighted classmates. The critical issue for these students will be access to brailled materials. It is important that students have access to a wide range of materials and that they are able to explore subjects of interest with the same enthusiasm as their classmates.

In some situations, a student who has recently lost his or her vision through trauma or disease will be in transition from print reading to braille reading during the high school years. These students will need targeted support from a teacher of students with visual impairments in order to move forward with confidence and competence.
