2008 Summer Camp Programs for Children with Visual Impairments
Held at CNIB's Bowen Lodge by the Sea
The summer camps jointly sponsored by CNIB, SET-BC and PRCVI are being held again this summer. All of the programs have a recreational component which includes swimming, biking, hiking, paddle-boating, kayaking, sailing, adaptive games and more.
Braille Literacy Program
Dates: July 22 - July 28, 2008
Registration Deadline: June 22, 2008
Ages: 8 to 12 years
This exciting program is being offered for the seventh summer at the CNIB - Bowen Island Lodge by the Sea. The camp is for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. A wide variety of novel literacy activities provide an opportunity for campers to develop their Braille reading and writing skills. A multitude of recreational activities, life skills instruction, and opportunities to become familiar with a range of assistive technologies are included. Campers enjoy the variety of rich experiences with their peers and inevitably make many new friends.
Braille Literacy campers are provided with opportunities to explore a variety of low to high technologies used for reading and writing braille. Technologies used for reading and writing braille at the camp include: Slate and Stylus, Braille Writers (Perkins and Mountbatten) and Braille notetakers and computers with refreshable Braille displays and speech.
Teen Tech/Rec Program
Dates: July 6 - 12, 2008
Registration Deadline: June 6, 2008
Ages: 13 to 18 years
Calling all blind and low vision campers between the ages of 13 and 18. Develop your skills in cyberspace using assistive technologies. Life skills instruction and recreational events will also be offered in an integrated environment.
This program is designed to meet the technology and recreational needs of blind and low vision campers between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. Through a well-integrated combination of life skills instruction, recreational events and technology activities, participants will have the opportunity to enhance their personal skill levels in each of these areas.
Campers will work with assistive technologies like JAWS, Kurzweil 1000, Kurzweil 3000 and Magic as well as productivity software like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Introductory computer skills and some experience with these software packages will be beneficial, but not essential.
Teen Transition/Tech/Rec Program
Dates: July 13 - 19, 2008
Registration Deadline: June 14, 2008
Ages: 16 to 19 years
This is the third year of this new camp.
The Teen Transition Tech/Rec Program is for high school students and recent grads who will be heading to college or university or out into the workforce.
This fun-filled, information-packed program is new on the Bowen Lodge roster this year. Teen Transition/Tech/Rec is geared towards high school students and recent grads who are heading into college, university or the workforce. Topics include career exploration and planning, discovering your aptitudes, setting goals, teamwork and self-esteem. Presented by CNIB and SET-BC.
