Student Stories

Johnathan

January 2008

Johnathan is an enthusiastic Grade 6 Vancouver student who has been supported by SET BC with computers since he was in Grade 1. He has cerebral palsy and is unable to speak in the traditional way but he knows how to make himself heard. He loves computers and uses them for work, fun, and communication.

Johnathan communicates using his Pathfinder as a cel phoneFor the last 2 and 1/ 2 years Johnathan has been using a sophisticated computerized communication device called the Pathfinder. This device uses a language called Minspeak which gives him the control to generate his own original communications rather than saying things which someone else has pre-programmed. Johnathan has learned this language and has also been involved with learning the operations of his Pathfinder. With his curiosity and with the support of his educational assistant, Andy Thompson, Johnathan learned that his Pathfinder had the capability to be used as a cel phone.

Johnathan contacted SET-BC consultant Yvonne Green to ask if it was possible for SET BC provide the necessary hardware to make his Pathfinder function as a cel phone. His supportive parents contribute by paying for the cel phone plan. Through Johnathan’s initiative and self advocacy he got the cel phone which he is now very proud of. From his wheelchair and with his device he is able to call his friends or family independently. We are all very proud of the way Johnathan is taking charge of directing his life in the same way that other 12 year olds are able to do.
