Carly’s Graduation Portfolio - May 2007
Carly attends secondary school in Nanaimo. She developed a graduation portfolio to demonstrate her talents, interests and abilities and has agreed to share this with us. The graduation portfolio process encourages students to gather and present evidence of skills, knowledge and competencies that will support their successful transition beyond Grade 12. The process is particularly pertinent to students with special needs, as it provides them with concrete evidence of the accomplishments they have achieved while in high school. The portfolio process encourages students to "Begin with your personal vision of the future."
Carly uses a LightWriter communication device to help other people to understand her speech. The words and phrases that she types into the LightWriter are spoken by the device, as well as being displayed on a small screen. Carly also uses a Chattervox voice amplification system, provided by her school district. The system amplifies her voice through a small microphone and the sound is transmitted through a speaker on her chair. Carly writes with the support of a SET-BC laptop with Kurzweil 3000 software.
Congratulations to Carly and her father, who recently completed the Vancouver marathon together.
