Katie and Erin Collaborate in creating an Accessible Book, "Shady Creek Trails"

Katie has a computer from SET-BC with a head switch for access. She uses the head switch to turn pages of accessible books, complete activities in Clicker 4, and change slides in PowerPoint. Katie and her educational assistant Mrs. Tutte created a powerpoint presentation called “Shady Creek Trials” about a school field trip.

Shailen is a grade 6 student in Westbank who has done a fabulous job of using technology successfully in her classroom and at home. Prior to getting her technology, she was often dependent on an Educational Assistant to scribe for her.

Jamie

Jamie Reads!

When Jamie first got his laptop computer, neither of us was sure how to use it. Luckily for us, our speech and language assistant came regularly to our class to install exciting new stories, poems and activities for his Clicker 5 program. All we had to do was click on the smiley face and away we could go. I told her that if I could learn to do the activities, then so could Jamie. Jamie, of course did much better than me but he was patient with me as he showed me how to make my sentences.

Communication Creates Connection with Secondary School Peers

Jennah is this year’s winner of the BC Council for Exceptional Children, Yes I Can Award, in the Technology category.   Jennah, a student who received her first technology loan from SET-BC at age 11, is very interested in the power of technology for communication.  Jennah is a non-verbal student with Cortical Visual Impairment and physical disabilities.  She currently uses a Techtalk 8 on loan from SET-BC.

Lisette is a very charming and engaging Grade 2 student in North Vancouver who has recently discovered the power of communicating with a Voice Output Communication Aid. Prior to receiving her Springboard last year, Lisette, who is non-verbal due in part to her tracheostomy, communicated with symbols and gestures.

Talking from the Heart: Life After Grade 12

Seven young adults, all of whom are blind or visually impaired, were invited by the Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired to share their experiences and insights about life before and after grade 12. The school-age students who attended this session were eager to listen to the stories and advice given by the young adults and had many questions for them.
