William: A First Person Account

Image: WilliamMy name is William and I am a grade twelve student from Vancouver Island. This is my story, and thank you for listening to it. I wish to tell you of the technology I have been given, and the reasons behind this incredible gift. Why I have been granted this, the most incredible tool, my computer.
Four years ago I was given a computer, but before that in middle school my marks were average. These grades were nothing special, and honestly it was only because of my motor skill condition, Dyspraxia, and not because of my intellect. My teachers recognized the reasons, but were unable to suggest anything until grade eight, when it was suggested that I be given a computer for school. Now I couldn't be any happier.

Thanks to this computer I am enjoying and even excelling in school with a ninety percent average, an accomplishment that I have only been able to do with this computer. I am now able to write in a clear, understandable way to a degree that my teachers and peers are able to actually read my work. With this computer, I have been able to improve my abilities as a writer, as it no longer hurts my hand to write for pages, upon pages, upon pages of notes, assignments, poems, and stories.

Now, I can find crucial information at the click of a button for my reports, and can enjoy having other people see my writing ability. When I first entered grade nine I thought I was unable to attend the harder courses, the courses that were necessary to go to the university that I wanted to. Courses in Math, Science, Literature, and History, but because I was given this computer I am able to feel confident enough, and write clearly enough for my teachers to understand what I am saying.

Even more important to me is that I am finally able to start my dream of becoming a professional author.  I completed writing my one act play, Tapping In, which I am trying to have published. Thank you so much, SET-BC, with words of gratitude longer than any other of my articles or essays I have ever written and can ever write the way I wanted to, which I am only able to do because of you.

William

William's play was accepted by the writer's festival in his community and he directed it on February 23rd.
