Ryan's Story

Ryan & Michael

Ryan is a secondary-aged student who successfully communicates and participates in class using auditory scanning with a dynamic display communication device. Using this system, Ryan navigates through the vocabulary stored in his Dynamyte, listening to a list of words, phrases or sentences and hitting a switch to repeat the message he wants to say.

Despite the slow and often tedious nature of his auditory scanning system, Ryan persists in communicating and making his point of view known. He has learned to be a strong self-advocate at school, ensuring that he is involved in decision making around his own activities and programs. His sense of humour and patience make it much easier for his communication partners to hear what he has to say.

Ryan relies on his teacher, Michael O’Reilly, and the rest of his school based team, who make sure that he has opportunities to communicate, participate and learn with the other students in his classes.

You can learn more about auditory scanning and watch a webcast of Ryan talking and demonstrating his abilities in the module "Auditory Scanning - User Demonstration" in SET-BC’s online Learning Centre.
