RJ is a 16 year old student enrolled in Grade 11 in Quesnel. He has been involved with CP Sports since he was eight, and began wheelchair racing when 11. This past summer he joined the Canadian National Team for races in England. RJ also enjoys wheelchair basketball, through BC Wheelchair Sports. He competed in the BC Winter Games in Quesnel in 2000, and will compete in the 2002 games in Williams Lake. Downhill skiing is yet another athletic interest. Music also plays a large part in RJ's life. He has played a bass keyboard in both the Concert and Jazz Bands for 3 years. RJ recently chose to opt out of concert band, dedicating more time to his academic commitments, but still plays with his favorite, the Jazz Band. |

RJ's Story - My computer has improved many things for me. I am able to keep up with notes in my classes at school, which helps me to better understand them as well. I don't have to always rush, with no time to process what I've heard. I am able to keep my grades up, something I wouldn't be able to do as well without this wonderful piece of technology. This has also made me much more independent than I might have become, doing my work without help, as opposed to having a scribe for everything that has to be written. I also love to write; it gives me an opportunity to express myself in everything I do and see; from expressing the excitement of sport, to describing the beauty of a hot day in summer. Without my computer, I would not be able to express myself in these ways; so instead of writing being fun and something to enjoy, it would be slow, cumbersome and frustrating. I received my first computer from SET-BC when I was in grade 3. It was a desktop computer, and it needed to be left at school. I got my first laptop in the middle of grade 7. I just received a new laptop computer at the beginning of my 11th year of school. I am on a full academic program, so the laptop helps a lot because it is small and easy to carry around to each of my different classes. I plan to go to university and become a Corporate Lawyer. RJ |
