Laura's Student Story

Technology means independence for Laura in her grade six classroom. She uses a word processor and Co:Writer on a laptop computer to produce all her written work, including her French assignments. The technology allows Laura to keep up with the ever-increasing volume of written work, as well as opportunities to express herself through creative writing.

She is very active at school as a library and computer monitor. At home, Laura follows up on class work, completes homework, uses e-mail to correspond with friends and does research on the Internet for class projects.

Laura's teacher provides challenging learning situations while her Special Education Assistant plays a key role in adapting Laura's work as needed. Templates are developed in advance for class assignments and examinations.

Laura's educational program is supported by mainstream support teacher, who also provides liaison between SET -BC and School Based Team. SET-BC loans the equipment and supports the opportunity to try novel assistive technology, while responding to Laura's ever changing needs.

Assistive technology plays an important role in leveling the educational playing field for Laura, increasing her self-esteem through success, skill development and independence.
