Garrett's Story
|
Garrett, a busy young man attending Grade 6 at Alexander Park Elementary School in Golden, has been a SET-BC supported student since 1998. He has experienced difficulty over the years producing written work and finds it challenging to keep up with class notes and assignments. In 1998, Garrett's school based team requested a computer system with the Write:OutLoud and Co:Writer software programs. Garrett worked hard over the past two years, becoming very adept at using Co:Writer to help increase the speed at which he writes. He used Write:OutLoud in the beginning as well, but has progressed to the point where he no longer needs auditory feedback from both programs and now prefers to use AppleWorks as his word processing program. |
|
| In December, Garrett's school based team received a new computer system - an iMac - with the new Co:Writer 4000 software. The team is very excited about the new topic dictionaries and flexible spelling features in this updated version. | |
| Since Garrett is looking ahead to transitioning to high school in a year, the team also requested an AlphaSmart 3000 so he could begin to take notes in class. Garrett uses his computer system with Co:Writer to complete a great deal of his written work - both daily class work and homework assignments. | |

Garrett seems very pleased with his new system. This is what he has to say about it...
"My name is Garrett, and I am in grade six. I have been using a computer from SET-BC for almost three years. I use Co:Writer and AppleWorks for most of my written work. Co:Writer helps me to write faster, and my fingers and hands don't get so tired. This year, I am using my computer to make title pages. I am looking forward to using my AlphaSmart to take notes at my desk. I hope my computer and my AlphaSmart will help me when I get to high school." |
