Donovan's Story

Donovan is an energetic young man attending Canyon-Lister Elementary in Creston, B.C. He has been receiving support from SET-BC since Cycle one of the 1999-2000 school year. Donovan has apraxia and, as a result, has difficulty communicating, both on paper and when speaking. He has a great deal to express, however, and his school team wanted to provide him with the tools to help him demonstrate his abilities and knowledge.

His technology package consists of a Windows computer with Intellitools. His school team worked hard when the technology arrived to learn how to make overlays and activities which would help him learn to read as well as write using the computer. They quickly created a number of interesting and useful overlays which Donovan began using on a daily basis to create journal entries, write simple sentences and learn new words.

The team reports that Intellitools has made a tremendous difference in Donovans progress in school. He uses the computer quite independently and can start the programs and load overlays himself. In fact, when I was visiting the school and asked to see him use his computer, I tried to help him load an overlay and he was very quick to push me off the mouse and load it himself. It was exciting to see how much he was able to do without any help whatsoever!

Donovan is currently trying out MathPad to see if it will help with his daily math work and his team continues to develop overlays and activities that expand his written vocabulary. Congratulations to Donovan and his team for such a successful implementation of this technology!
