Cody's Student Success Story
Cody uses a Macintosh computer with programs that have auditory output, such as: Write Outloud, Kids Works Deluxe and Stanley's Sticker Stories. His academic material is scanned into the computer so that he can "type" his answers. Cody has sensory integration issues that prevent printing and/or handwriting from becoming functional. Different color text in Write Outloud is used to highlight important information.
Each day Cody prepares a book for his parents about what he did in school. His parents read this book with him and reinforce what was taught in school. A color printer and scanner, provided by the school, supports this activity. In addition to the technology, SET-BC has provided troubleshooting for the equipment, software suggestions and inservice support.
Technology allows Cody to particpate in classroom activities. He is more focused and able to attend for longer periods. Being in the classroom also provides opportunities for more social interaction. Most importantly, learning to read and write is what has taught Cody to "speak". He is a very fast visual learner and in this last year, he has started to speak in sentences.
Cody started the Milestones reading program this year and is now on level 2, book 8. Technology helps Cody to express his level of understanding and cognition (that is largely misjudged through traditional methods).
Good Work Cody!
