Adam was diagnosed with autism when he was four years old. When he started kindergarten, he had delayed speech and language skills, poor gross and fine motor skills, and displayed sensory defensiveness in several areas. Adam did not like to engage in messy activities with his hands and avoided pencil/paper activities. However, he showed a great interest in the computer, which he had been introduced to during speech therapy sessions before entering school. In grade one, Adam received a computer from SET-BC.
The computer has given him the ability to express his imagination and his view of the world. We have been able to learn more about Adam (eg fears he has expressed) through some of the stories he has written on the computer. This process has encouraged all those working with Adam in that with the proper support and teaching he is capable of learning many things. His written output has steadily increased as a result of using the computer.
Adam continues to use the computer for written output (using ClarisWorks and CoWriter). During the next year the focus will be to teach more independence in accessing the computer to compliment the curriculum.
