Bryce's Success Story
January 2009

When Bryce, a grade 5 student at Cranbrook's Amy Woodland Elementary School, received his SET-BC desktop Mac in the winter of 2008, he was just beginning to learn phonemic awareness. At that time, the only word he could independently identify was his own name, and "writing" consisted of copying dotted letters.
The SET-BC consultant trained the team on Boardmaker, and they set up some fun starter activities for him..
Within a few months, Bryce could identify and type out (with support) "s", "t", "p" and "b" for beginning sounds of words. When his Educational Assistant, Jodie, shows him a picture card and says the matching sound, he can type the corresponding letter.
Bryce can now read "mom" and "the" readily when he sees them in Boardmaker activities. He occasionally surprises Jodie; for example, he read "pie" the other day after they had been working on the "p" sound for quite awhile. On another day, he recognized "pond".
Daily computer activities, plus a very dedicated school team have guided Bryce’s considerable progress in just a few short months.
