Rebecca and Timmy Meet for First Time

September 2008

In the spring of 2008, the Virtual Voices Village website ran a contest asking BC students with disabilities to design a mascot for the website, and Timmy Technology was the winning entry by Rebecca from Delta BC.

Rebecca presents to her class. Later she meets Timmy for the first time!Rebecca’s imagination and sense of humour combined to invent a charming character who is now a resident of Virtual Voices Village. Timmy has all of the attributes we could wish for in a Mascot representing BC students with disabilities.

Over the summer, Daphne Mercier of the SET-BC provincial resource team faithfully transformed Rebecca’s design into Timmy Technology. On September 25th, Rebecca spoke to the grade 5 students in her school to tell how she had come up with the idea for Timmy, entered the contest and how her submission had won.

Rebecca was presented with Timmy, who will remain with her class for 3 weeks.

Timmy travels with a video/still camera and ideas for activities to raise awareness of children with disabilities who use technology to write or to communicate. Timmy will tour the province visiting students, classrooms and families.

If you would like Timmy to attend an event in your school, or if you would like to show him the sights and sounds of your community, Timmy will travel by courier right to your classroom. You can use his camera to record the visit, and you can write a story to publish on the www.vvvillage.org website.

Rebecca, her classmates and family will post the story of Timmy’s first visit this year!
