Date I joined SET-BC

I would say that my path as an educator parallels that of my path as a learner in many ways. First, I believe that learning is a continuous and never-ending process and teaching is very much the same. Secondly, I embrace diversity in learning about different topics and this has led to some wonderful discoveries about life and about myself. Finally, I strive to put myself in difficult situations as I believe that growth comes from overcoming adversities.
To this end, I have endeavored to fill my teaching career of 15 years with a variety of different environments and challenges. I started off as a primary teacher at Shaughnessy Elementary in Vancouver, BC where I taught grades Kindergarten to Grade 4 over six years. Afterwards, I moved to the neighbouring Prince of Wales Secondary school where I taught for the TREK Outdoor Education Program (grade 10) for the next six years. As one of four teachers on the TREK team, I was fortunate to be able to introduce students to many wilderness activities such as backcountry skiing, sea kayaking, and hiking as well as showing them the natural wonders that our province has to offer. In addition, students were made aware of environmental and sustainability issues and provided with leadership skills.
Somewhere in there, I managed to complete my Masters in Educational Technology at the University of British Columbia. Joining SET-BC allowed me to incorporate many of the educational principles of my course work. In the past three years, I have been the consultant for several of the school districts in the Lower Mainland including Delta, Surrey, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Fraser Cascade.
I was first enamoured with technology when my family bought a Pong console when it first came out. That was quickly followed by a Radio Shack TRS-80, an Apple 2, and later on a variety of IBM behemoths. Needless to say, technology has and always will be an integral interest.
Other interests include spending time with my family, which includes two boys aged 5 and 7, wandering and exploring the world with them.
