Welcome to SET-BC Direct, an on-line newsletter for people who are interested in issues and resources regarding the use of assistive technologies in education.

SET-BC Direct is intended to help teachers and other professionals who have questions regarding the implementation of technology for students with special needs. Subscribers may also be interested in the SET-BC program itself; our model for service delivery and the projects we develop to better assist students with disabilities.

In this issue:

1. Summer use of SET-BC loan equipment

2. Assistive Technology in the Classroom - Harry's Journey

3. Charting Our Way Vision Conference

4. SET-BC Technology Inclusion Project

5. Sooke Student Scores Big - Student Success Story

As the 98-99 school year comes to a close, we would like to thank our subscribers for their interest in SET-BC Direct. Our first six issues presented many challenges, and your suggestions have helped to shape this on-line newsletter.

The next issue of SET-BC Direct will be at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year. This summer watch for updates on the SET-BC website including: @VisionTech 99; Charting Our Way Vision Conference and new articles and resources.

Come see what's new!

1. Summer use of SET-BC loan equipment

SET-BC recognizes that many students can benefit from summer use of loan equipment, however, the decision to allow home use is entirely at the discretion of the school district. Please also be aware that support or repair for equipment is not available from SET-BC during July or August.

Since SET-BC equipment is loaned to the school district it should be cared for as if it is school district equipment and be subject to any policies and procedures currently used by the district. SET-BC looks forward to continuing to work in partnership with school districts to support the assistive technology needs of students with disabilities. For more information on SET-BC equipment policies see http://www.setbc.org/servdeli/bulletin.html

2. Assistive Technology in the Classroom - Harry's Journey

This video illustrates the experience of one student with autism and his team. While Harry's story is unique, it encompasses many ideas that will be of interest to professionals working with autistic students. We hope this video will provide discussion about solutions for the individual students you work with.

3. Charting Our Way Vision Conference

Over 20 speakers from Canada and the United States will present an exciting and informative program for those who are living or working with children who have visual impairments.

4. SET-BC Technology Inclusion Project

SET-BC is pleased to announce an exciting provincial initiative for the 1999 - 2000 school year, the Technology Inclusion Project. This project will involve students with multiple handicaps who would benefit from using technology to achieve their educational goals. Both SET-BC and school district staff have observed that these students are not often put forward for SET-BC services and this project has been designed to address their technology needs.

5. Sooke Student Scores Big - Student Success Story

Grade 12 student Liam Walsh has scored big, winning a trip to the Score 99 computer camp in Toronto July 11 to 24. Walsh, who's visually impaired from albinism, wrote an essay on the future of information technology with regards to the visually impaired, which won him a trip to the camp.
