VVVillage Digital Publishing Contest deadline of April 28 is approaching fast! 

Go to http://www.vvvillage.org/ for contest rules.  Everyone wins something, and the top prizes will include iTunes gift certificates.  Scoring is holistic, so students can write or make artwork at their own level.  Participation is the key to winning!

Sign Up for Our Summer Programs Now!

This summer, BC students and educators will have a chance to take part in a number of exciting programs presented by SET-BC and our community partners.

@VisionTech at Beautiful Bowen Lodge by the Sea
The Canadian National Institute for the Blind - BC/Yukon Division and SET-BC are offering 3 summer programs for youth and teens with visual impairments. This is the eighth consecutive year that CNIB and SET-BC have teamed up to create innovative learning opportunities in the perfect setting of Bowen Island Lodge by the Sea. Braille Literacy
Dates: July 4 – 9, 2006

This program is for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years. A wide variety of fun activities have been designed to help participants develop their Braille literacy. The camp program provides a wonderful integration of recreation activities, life skills instruction, and exploration of a variety of assistive technologies.

Teen Tech/Rec
Dates: July 11-17, 2006

Calling all blind and low vision campers between the ages of 13 and 18! Develop your skills in cyberspace using assistive technologies. Life skills instruction and recreational events will also be offered in an integrated environment. Campers will work with assistive technologies like JAWS, Kurzweil 1000, Kurzweil 3000 and Magic, as well as productivity software like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Introductory computer skills and some experience with these software packages will be beneficial, but not essential.

Teen Transition/Tech/Rec
Dates: July 18 - 23, 2006

The Teen Transition Tech/Rec Program is for 16 to 19 year old high school students and recent grads who will be heading to college or university or out into the workforce. This fun-filled, information-packed program is new on the Bowen Lodge roster this year. Topics include career exploration and planning, discovering your aptitudes, setting goals, teamwork, and self-esteem.

 

EPSE 410: Assistive Technology in Special Education

Dates: July 4 - 21, 2006

The University of British Columbia and SET-BC will present this fast paced, highly interactive course. Educators will learn strategies to effectively implement assistive and instructional technologies with students who struggle with typical curricular tasks. This will be a credit course, offering on-campus instruction at UBC for the first and last three days and online activities and collaboration for the other days. Virtual Voices

Dates: August 29 – September 2, 2006

The BC Lions Easter Seal Camping Program and SET-BC will host this program of recreational and communication activities at Camp Squamish for 14 to 19 year old students with augmentative communication needs. Virtual Voices has a unique focus on building augmentative communication and technology skills in a recreational camp atmosphere. This summer, Virtual Voices will connect campers with students who have graduated from the school system and can offer their perspectives on post-secondary education, community involvement and “life after school”.
