Remote and Rural Schools Project

This year, SET-BC is conducting a number of projects to support schools in remote and rural areas of our province. These projects are designed to investigate and explore how technology can support students in classrooms.

For more information on these projects, please contact the Implementation Support Team at ist@setbc.org.

Bella Coola Project

Efforts are underway to audio record 260 books in a leveled reading program that highlights and features First Nations heritage and culture. These audio recordings will be uploaded into the alternate formats repository, ARC-BC, as they become available so that schools around the province can also benefit from these recordings. Students struggling with reading will first listen to these audio books on a computer and follow along in the book and later read the text to a teacher or a peer.  Because of the rich oral tradition of First Nations people, it is hoped that these audio recordings will enhance and support student reading progress.

Dease Lake Project

Students in a Grade 9/10 classroom at will use a variety of technology to support and enhance student learning. The classroom teacher in collaboration with district staff will use the assistive technology software program Kurzweil 3000 to meet a variety of student learning needs. The Smart Board will be used to model how to use study skills and reading tools in Kurzweil 3000.  The students with perceptual disabilities will also have access to alternate formats of their texts made available by ARC-BC.

Gold River Project

Still in its planning stages, this project hopes to connect teachers in 3 schools in this remote area on Vancouver Island. The teachers will develop classroom activities based on Personalized Learning for the 21st Century and Universal Design for Learning principles to support all learners in the classroom. Technology will connect these 3 classrooms to each other and beyond.
