Assistive Technology For Students With Low Vision Low Tech/No Tech Options |
Low Tech/No Tech OptionsAnne Corn and Alan Koenig º (1996) describe a person with low vision as someone who has difficulty accomplishing visual tasks, even with prescribed corrective lenses, but who can enhance his or her ability to accomplish these tasks with the use of compensatory visual strategies, low vision and other devices, and environmental modifications.
The following section will deal with some suggestions in these three major areas of need. The question can be asked why this discussion would be necessary in a document dealing with technology. It is important for a student with low vision to have available to them strategies and devices that can be used for instruction in pretechnology settings as well as a back up system when their technology is down for repair. It can also be noted that technology is not the panacea for all students with low vision and some students may decide to continue with low tech/no tech options as they are more efficient and effective for them.
