Assistive Technology For Students With Low Vision Magnification and Large Print |
Magnification and Large PrintIn order to read text efficiently students with low vision may require the following methods of text magnification:
- moving closer to the text (relative distance magnification)
- making print larger (relative size magnification)
- increasing the apparent size of the object through a lens system (angular magnification)
- projecting the text image to enlarge it (CCTV - projection magnification)
Students who depend on large print books for all or most of their reading materials are often disadvantaged because of the limited availability of large print materials, particularly outside of the public school system. Students with low vision should acquire a variety of efficient literacy tools, that incorporate a range of technologies, to meet their changing educational needs. As a student's tasks and needs change new literacy tools are added to a "personal toolbox". Ongoing assessment is required to determine if the student's toolbox is adequate to meet immediate and future requirements. New technology tools need to be added and taught prior to when they are required.
