Universal Design for Learning: Subtle Shift, Profound Change (2009)
This presentation features resource teacher Anita Strang discussing how UDL has transformed the way that student support is delivered at Birchland Elementary School in Coquitlam, B.C. Anita describes a subtle change in “thinking UDL” that resulted in rapid and profound changes for teachers and students.
In the first year of the UDL project at Birchland Elementary, learning assistance changed from a mostly pullout program to a mostly inclusive program. Anita described this change in a January 2009 blog post entitled “How UDL has Changed my Job” which was picked up on Twitter and spread rapidly through the UDL community.
In this interview, conducted by UDL Project Leader Mallory Burton, Anita discusses the reasons for this change, the difference she now sees in IEP meetings, and how teachers overcome curriculum barriers by planning for diversity. Anita also discusses UDL and technology, comments on the possible reasons for her students’ successes in inclusive classrooms and talks about her school’s continuing journey with UDL.
