Low Vision and Other Devices

A number of specialized devices are available to enhance visual performance including magnifiers, distance aids (monocular), CCTV, speaking language master and the tape recorder.

Commercial products that assist in the instruction of math and science include: tactile and large print models, tactile and high contrast rulers, calculators and manipulatives. Many classroom manipulatives can be purchased or teacher made to help with the required visual tasks in these areas. The abacus is an excellent tool for teaching place value and taking some of the abstract concepts of math functions and teaching them in a concrete form through the manipulation of the beads. Later these concepts can be transferred to the calculator.
