Compensatory Visual Strategies

Compensatory Visual Strategies

One of the easiest ways to enhance magnification is to alter the viewing distance of printed materials by bringing the material closer to the eye. In most cases students will intuitively view objects and materials of interest at their best viewing distance and position. This compensation can result in bad posture, fatigue from holding the materials and blockage of lighting. Reading stands and slant boards can be very beneficial in these cases. Adjustments to external lighting sources should also be considered. A functional vision assessment by a qualified teacher for the visually impaired can provide valuable information in this area.
