Reading & Writing The Four Blocks Way
Drs. Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver's visit to B.C. in February, 2002 presented an opportunity for BC educators and therapists to participate in two days of presentations on "Children with Disabilities Reading and Writing the Four Block Way." Dr. Erickson runs the Literacy Center at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Koppenhaver is an Education professor at Gustavus Adolphus University. |

David and Karen's presentation was rich in case study ideas, experiences, and strategies for teaching reading and writing to all students. Their presentation on reading and writing the four blocks way was engaging with bountiful references to professional reference literature, research, and case study experiences. Strategies were shared for accommodating physical demands, cognitive demands, sensory demands, communication demands, experience demands, and affect demands. |
| An on-site audience in Vancouver and remote videoconference audiences enjoyed a fruitful day of lecture, case study experiences, and guided group discussions. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to study reading and writing instruction "the four blocks way" the balanced literacy instruction approach that includes guided reading, self- directed reading, working with words, and writing. |
