Dr Mirenda Presenting at SET-BC

Participants at on off-site location in Vancouver
On November 27th 2008 SET-BC hosted a presentation by Dr Pat Mirenda entitled Video Modeling: What, Why, How, and Examples. In this informative and practical session Dr Mirenda presented both the latest research into the use of video modeling with students with autism as well as the steps necessary in creating successful videos.
Dr Mirenda describes video modeling as a student viewing a videotape of a model engaging in a desired behavior and subsequently imitating the model. Most students enjoy watching videos and will often model what they see. With video technology becoming increasingly cheaper it is becoming more accessible for schools and families. Dr Mirenda taught how factors such as identifying the activity-specificpurposeof the video model, preparation of simple scripts and selection of appropriate models are critical for successful video modeling. Dr Mirenda made extensive use of videos she and her students have created to demonstrate these points.
As well as the main site at our Provincial Centre, five external sites throughout Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland joined the presentation online. There were technical glitches that impacted the external sites ability to see the entire session. Comments from these sites indicated that even though there were these technical issues they were extremely happy with the information that Dr Mirenda presented. Every site spent time in the afternoon working on developing videos for their own students. We hope to have a follow up session later in the school year where we can share the videos we have created with our students.
