@Virtual Voices Day at Science World

Twelve @Virtual Voices campers experienced an exciting day of exploration at Science World. The purpose of this trip was to involve the students in a fun-filled day of learning and enable them to re-connect with their fellow campers.

The BC Lions Society Easter Seal staff worked hard to make the experience as close to a typical summer camp as possible, with games, sports, and drama. The team of augmentative communication specialists taught the campers strategies for communication, enabling them to take part in all camp activities with their new friends.
The visit to Science World was an opportunity to further communication goals for students. Several speech-language pathologists accompanied their students on the field trip. In order to prepare for the event, SET-BC provided the SLP's with information regarding vocabulary and conversation goals. Special words for the day included: "YUCK, EEK, GROSS and SNOT." They learned about how the body works through colourful animatronics and imaginative exhibits. During the hands-on workshop, the campers used their augmentative communication devices to ask questions and to share information with each other.
The visit also provided an opportunity for school staff and parents to learn more about the @Virtual Voices summer camp and to share strategies for supporting effective communication. Discussions were held to get feedback on student progress, camp logistics and plans for next year. Special thanks to the school-based teams that participated and to Science World for making our day so much fun. Stay tuned to SET-BC for information about next summer's camps...
