On December 6 and 7, team leaders from five BC school districts and SET-BC Regional consultants attended two days of training. Trevor Calkins, a leader in Mathematics instruction in British Columbia and 1989 BC Mathematics teacher of the Year, led the group through activities that demonstrated effective teaching practices in math referenced by research. Power of Ten materials and software, developed by Calkins , were among the project resources used. Teams explored activities in both mainstream commercial programs and specialized software with adapted access for students with physical disabilities. Access to Math, IntelliMathics, Math Pad Plus, and Time Scales were chosen for their built in adaptable access features, allowing users to participate in activities requiring math manipulatives and detailed calculations. |
| Teams from Prince George, Prince Rupert, Vernon, Vancouver, and Sooke school districts are participating in the project. Fifty students from the districts will benefit from access to math activities tailored to meet their access needs. Student impact stories and a project report will be published in June, 2002. A list of the project software and activity cue cards will be posted on the SET-BC website in the near future. Five more Regional teams will be chosen for the second year of this project. More information is available from the project coordinator, Constance McAvoy. |
