On January 11th, 2002, seven individuals who use specialized computers to talk, gathered together in Nanaimo, BC. Four middle school and high school students and three young adults from Vancouver Island participated in the event. Gail VanTatenhove, a Communication Consultant from Florida, was on hand to lead the day and share her experiences with running an AAC User Group.

The attendees were able to express their opinions as to if and how the group should function, and the members from the "MaxSpeakers" in Florida were able to give their advice via videotape. Image: AAC Students in Class

The Island group has decided to meet regularly and will focus on discussing advocacy issues, organizing social activites, and participating in opportunities as they arise. They call their group "The Cool Communicators." Cooperation from staff in the Comox Valley, Nanimo-Ladysmith and Saanich School Districts, Aroga, Partners In Communication and SET-BC have made this event and continued process possible. Teamwork at it's best!
