PAC Mate Users Connect

April 2007

A number of blind students on Vancouver Island recently attended a training session on the use of the PAC Mate Braille note-taker. This compact device enables a user to write, save, read, and print Braille files. The PAC Mate also provides access to the Internet.

Marilyn Rushton, who was the leader for the workshop, is a Vancouver School District teacher who supports students who are visually impaired. As a teacher who is blind, Marilyn loves using her own PAC Mate and has a wealth of practical information to share with other device users.

Marilyn and her guide dog Tempo travelled to Victoria and spent the day helping 5 SET-BC students (and their school-based teams) learn to use their PAC Mates more effectively.

Rhianna is a grade 5 student from Campbell River. She came more than 250 km from Campbell River for the day with Mrs. Rushton, but she found it well worthwhile as she was able to solve some problems that she had encountered with her PAC Mate.

Kaitlyn, a high school student from Sooke, was excited about being able to go on the Internet with her PAC Mate for the first time. All of the students enjoyed connecting with each other and returned to their own school districts with new skills and strategies for using their technologies.
