Northern Training Partnership

SET-BC, the University of Northern British Columbia, School District #57 (Prince George) and its Professional Employees Association joined forces to host a training opportunity for educators in the Prince George area. This 2-day session, "Communication & Cognitive Development: Assessment & Intervention for Children with Multiple Disabilities" was presented by Philip Schweigert, of the Oregon Institute on Disability and Development. Philip coordinates a number of federal research projects which focus on the enhancement of communication and cognitive skills of individuals with severe and multiple disabilities and has written and presented extensively on this topic.

Shel Harris of SET-BC accepts the generous contribution of the Prince George Professional Employees Association from Robyn Thrift.

The 86 workshop participants, from regional school districts and community service agencies, learned about a number of effective interventions for assessing student learning strengths, using pre-symbolic communication and tangible symbol systems, and developing cognitive skills. Philip used individual case studies and videotaped examples to demonstrate how to implement his approach in the classroom. The participants felt that the content, instruction and practical exercises provided them with valuable information and resources for their work with BC students.
