Emerging Braille Literacy Project

02/03

BC teachers of students with visual impairments attended SET-BC technology workshops in Vancouver. Steve Barclay, of Aroga Technologies, presented hands-on workshops on the Mountbatten Pro, an electronic braille notetaker and embosser.

Tim Connell from Quantum Technologies of Australia, manufacturer of the Mountbatten Pro, traveled to Vancouver to co-present the advanced MB Pro training with Aroga. The two training events were offered in the fall of 2002; an introductory workshop for beginning teams and an advanced workshop for teams continuing in the project.

The teachers and their students are taking part in the fourth year of SET-BC's Emerging Braille Literacy Project. The results of the first two years of this study, which included 16 primary age students, show that the Mountbatten is an effective teaching and learning tool for literacy development.
SET-BC will provide on-going support for the students and teachers using the MB Pro and will continue to collect their feedback on its effectiveness in the classroom via surveys and discussion groups. This timely educational and technological support will help braille-using students to develop the reading and writing skills they need to participate and learn independently.

MB Pro teams are delighted to receive the set of teaching resources, "MB Pro Braille Writer: Step by Step Introductory Lessons". These comprehensive and informative guides were developed for SET-BC by Graham Cook, who teaches students with visual impairments in School District # 59 (Peace River South).
Quantum Technologies of Australia has incorporated these lessons into its international training packages!
