Student Educational Assistants Explore Access Technology

Student Educational Assistants (SEAs) in the Golden zone of School District #6 (Rocky Mountain) recently completed a sixteen hour course on Access Technology.

The course, one of three in a series, was facilitated by Kerry Randle, SET-BC’s Regional Coordinator in the Kootenays and offered participants the opportunity for hands on exploration of a wide variety of access technologies.

Course participants learned about switches, operating system options, alternate keyboards, and pointing devices and ways to provide the best access technology to match their students’ needs. They also received detailed training on access software such as Co:Writer 4000 and IntelliTalk II. As part of the course requirements, participants conducted an internet search and soon discovered the huge array of resources available on the web in the area of assistive technology.

It was a very busy sixteen hours, completed over two Friday nights and Saturdays, but participants seemed pleased with the knowledge they gained and especially enjoyed the opportunity to try out the various technologies.

The course will be offered again in the next two months in the Invermere and Kimberley zones of the school district. If you would like to know more about this course, please contact Kerry Randle at the SET-BC Region 4 Centre or Elaine Ferguson at the SET-BC Provincial Centre.
