Communicating with Dynamo & Dynamite

Quidditch and Snitches Help Harry Potter Fans Communicate! Jennifer Morrison of Sunrise Medical led a 2 day workshop on Dynamic Display VOCA's (Voice Output Communication Aids) in which school based teams learned how to program the Dynavox and the Dynamite. School based teams from the lower mainland and Vancouver Island spent the first day learning the basics of designing individual communication systems for dynamic display devices. Linking, vocabulary, and picture selection were all presented and discussed. |

The second day was devoted to curriculum adaptations. Teams dove into activities that produced writing, word prediction, quizzes, and setups for social interaction. One team developed boards to initiate adults into the world of Harry Potter. The communications from the board always left a vocabulary item, such as Quidditch, undefined so the "listener" had to ask the student another question. e.g. one button would offer "a snitch is a winged ball used in the Game of Quidditch" which evokes the question what is Quidditch and another communication from the device user. |
| All teams learned from one another and from Jennifer Morrison's extensive knowledge and experience. Insightful VOCA lessons were presented and good ideas were exchanged. |
