Focus on AAC Training

In October 1999, SET-BC and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children sponsored a series of workshops on alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). These full-day sessions were attended by over 100 speech language pathologists and teachers in Richmond, Victoria, Prince George, & Vernon.

Sunny Hill staff presented a useful framework for AAC assessment and matching AAC strategies to student needs, illustrating the process with an interesting case study. SET-BC presenters focused on the role of voice output technologies in AAC and strategies for implementing technology in the classroom. Workshop participants had an opportunity to test and compare the features of a wide range of AAC technologies..
At these workshops, SET-BC distributed copies of a new resource for BC educators, Augmentative Communication: A Way of Thinking. This guide focuses on strategies for supporting technical and non-technical augmentative communication systems in the classroom and is currently available in draft format. We are looking for reader's comments on its content and format. Image:Staff Assessing Dynamic Screen Devices
