The Salmon Project – Developing Curriculum Activities
July 2008

Salmon is a very important resource to British Columbia, and their study is part of the curriculum for many students in the province.
To increase access to this curriculum, Mallory Burton, SET-BC consultant for Prince Rupert, the heart of wild salmon fishing, determined the need for student resources on salmon. With permission from Fisheries & Oceans Canada to use their classroom resources, she began the process of designing the units. Then on April 24th, she gathered together a group of teachers and with help from the SET-BC provincial centre, they created curriculum activities on salmon using Clicker 5.
It was a fun way to learn about Clicker 5 while developing activities that use a universal design for learning structure. The activities examine the various stages of the salmon life cycle. All activities begin with a self-evaluation section, followed by a reading section that introduces the information to students and concludes with writing templates at three levels, enabling students with various abilities to represent what they have learned. These fabulous activities are now completed and are available for download to anyone with Clicker 5 installed on a computer. See The Salmon Study Unit in curriculumSET in our Learning Centre.
