An Overview of Augmentative & Alternative Communication Technologies

“Supporting People who use AAC Strategies: in the Home, School and Community”

Do you have a student or client who cannot communicate effectively using speech? Is it a challenge to support this individual’s participation in the classroom or community? Then this is the workshop for you!

You are invited to this SET-BC/CAYA overview of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technology options. We will introduce considerations for assessment, planning, implementation and transition for students and adults with AAC needs. To help you sort through AAC possibilities, we will identify and demonstrate the key features of a range of technologies. You will have a chance to explore different types of AAC devices (single and multiple message, dynamic display, icon sequence, and text-to-speech). All participants will receive a copy of SET-BC/CAYA’s updated resource guide, “Supporting People who use AAC Strategies: in the Home, School and Community”.

Participants will learn:

  • Key elements of the augmentative communication process
  • Considerations for matching AAC technologies to student/client need
  • Inclusive strategies for communication in the classroom, home and community
  • Main features of different types of AAC technologies

Who should attend this workshop?

Team members working with students or adults who use AAC technologies will be interested in this workshop. This may include speech language pathologists, specialist and classroom teachers, classroom assistants, community workers and therapists.
