keisha_2upKeisha is a successful Grade 10 student who uses braille technology to complete her academic program.  In her own words she describes how technology has helped her now and in her plans for an independent future.

My name is Keisha.  I am a visually impaired, grade 10 student attending Merritt Secondary School in Merritt BC.  I love school, and especially enjoy the subject English.  Outside of school I love to read, alpine ski, ride my bike, hang out with friends, and much more.  I live on a farm with sheep, chickens, dogs, and cats, which has inspired a great love for the outdoors and animals.

SET-BC has provided me with several pieces of technology that have enhanced my academic life greatly.  They provided me with a Tiger Max embosser, which not only embosses regular braille, but is also able to emboss the graphics I need for courses like science and math.  SET-BC also provided me with a Toshiba laptop and the Jaws program, so that I could access the internet and use Microsoft Word, and other programs for classroom assignments.

Most of all, my life changed with the arrival of the Braillenote Apex, six years ago.  Now, instead of having to carry big braille novels which come in many volumes, I am able to download and read full books on this portable device.  Not only that, but the braillenote has allowed me to do classroom assignments and email them to my teachers so that I am more independent at school.  The braillenote has internet access, which is also very useful.

I believe that I can do anything, and I know that it is important to try my very best and shoot for the stars.  I also believe that it is important to be as independent as possible. The technology from SET-BC has allowed me to become more and more independent, which will be crucial for post secondary education and a future career. The assistive technology has also given me more independance in my quest for knowledge and has allowed me to access it. I hope that SET-BC will continue to provide students like me with the assistive technology they need to access more knowledge that they may not be able to access otherwise.

With so much obvious ability and her keen desire to succeed, we have no doubt that Keisha will have a wonderful, star-filled future!
