SET-BC District Partners and consultants from all over Vancouver Island and Powell River (Region 1) met in Victoria to network and to learn about SET-BC service delivery and new assistive technology tools. Twenty-four people attended the meeting, including 2 District Partners who will be leaving us this year – Marcus Slotiuk (SD #70) and Vernon Currie (SD #47). Thank you to Vernon and Marcus for your contributions over the years – you will be missed. While we said good-bye to two, we welcomed five new District Partners and look forward to working with them in the coming years.
Our guest speaker in the morning was Cindi Johnson from Bridges who demonstrated the new Co:Writer 6 and SOLO 6. We had a chance to talk about the new simpler design of Co:Writer 6 and SOLO and had an interesting conversation comparing these products to Word Q and Kurzweil 3000.
Later in the morning, we had a chance to look at the new layout of the SET-BC website, reviewed new technologies in the loan bank and had discussions about ARC-BC, the AT Considerations Guidelines and Category C students.
The big highlights of the day were the competitive Jeopardy Game and the District Partners’ Assistive Technology Toolkits which contained software, hardware and other assistive technology resources. In the afternoon we had an introduction to some of the software titles in their toolkits, including Switch It Maker, Boardmaker Plus and Clicker Paint.
At the end of the day, one of the District Partners commented that, “It was truly overwhelming! – to once again share resources, ideas and have the opportunity for that collegial communication.” A very enjoyable and informative day was had by all – we look forward to our next meeting!
